About Stephen Smith, MD

Dr. Stephen Smith is board certified in pain management by both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine. He is also board certified in anesthesiology. Dr. Smith received his medical degree in 1987 at University of Alabama in Birmingham. His residency training was at Louisiana State University and St. Louis University hospital.

Beginning as an attending anesthesiologist at St. Louis University Hospital in 1994, Dr. Smith's primary focus was pain management. He was recruited in 1996 to direct the Pain Management Department at Christian Northeast Hospital and he remained there for 10 years. Dr. Smith opened a pain management clinic in Chesterfield in 2002 and a second clinic in 2006 in the North County area. He is currently on staff at DePaul Hospital and Missouri Baptist Hospital.

Jennifer Canale, Nurse Practitioner
RN, MSN, NP-C

Jennifer completed her undergraduate training at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She received her Master of Science in Nursing and completed the nurse practitioner program at St. Louis University. Prior to working at Midwest Pain Center, Jen was a critical care nurse. She has been with Midwest Pain Center since February 2008.

Consult a pain management specialist if pain persists:

Greater than three months
After one or more doctors have been seen about pain without satisfactory pain relief
After taking prescription pain medications

Or, if the following occurs because of pain:

Decrease in quality of life
Difficulty sleeping
Difficulty functioning at work
Physical inactivity
Anxiety or depression
Withdrawal from family and/or friends
